Ryan Grigson was busy orchestrating the perfect offseason for the Indianapolis Colts this year, and they are viewed as one of the top contenders to win Super Bowl 50. They are without question one of the most dominant teams in the NFL on paper, but translating that to the field is much more difficult. It is going to be a very entertaining and exciting season, and it ill be interesting to see what ends up happening for the Colts.
There aren’t any teams in the AFC that look better all-around than the Colts, but their main competition will come from the NFC if they do reach the Super Bowl. Teams like the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks are going to be very tough for the Colts to beat, but they are now without question worthy of being ranked among them.
Needless to say, it is going to be a very interesting 2015 season across the entire NFL.
That being said, if the Colts live up to their full potential there is nothing holding them back from winning Super Bowl 50. Andrew Luck has an incredible offense around him, and the Colts have built their defense up into one that should compete well against any offense they face. What five reasons can be given to support the statement that the Colts will win the Super Bowl this coming season?
1. Best Receiving Corps in the League
Despite the fact that the Colts already had an impressive wide receiving corps, Grigson and Colts’ owner Jim Irsay went out and improved it this offseason. They decided to let Reggie Wayne walk which stung the organization and fan base, but they signed veteran star receiver Andre Johnson who used to play with their division rival Houston Texans. He is a major upgrade over Wayne, and adding Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Phillip Dorsett in the first round of the draft made them even more dangerous.
There is no question that they will fit well alongside of budding star T.Y. Hilton and second-year target Donte Moncrief. Forgotten in the depth at the position is NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter’s son, Duron, who was signed as a free agent. No other team in the NFL has the type of targets for their quarterback that the Colts have, and they have one of the best quarterbacks in the game to use them.
2. Robert Mathis Returning to the Field
Last season, the Colts were unable to find any type of consistent pass rush from their defense. Robert Mathis missed the entire season after tearing his Achilles, but will be making his return during the 2015 season. Simply having him back on the field is going to make the Indianapolis defense better, and he will be bringing the type of playmaking ability that caused 19.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles for the Colts’ defense during the 2013 season.
3. A Legitimate Ground Attack with Frank Gore
Watching Trent Richardson try to run the football was absolute torture for Colts’ fans over the past couple of seasons. They saw Ahmad Bradshaw step up and give them something to cheer for, but the running game was pathetic to say the very least.
Signing Frank Gore in free agency was a huge step in the right direction for them, and they will likely have a 1,000-yard rusher for the first time in a long time. Indianapolis needed to bring in some help for Luck, and that is exactly what the veteran running back will do. Defenses will now have to shut down a very solid ground attack while also covering the NFL’s best passing offense from 2014.
4. Finally Having the Experience
Indianapolis has been viewed as an up-and-coming team since Luck was first drafted with the number one overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. They have taken a step forward each and every season since he came on board, and last season ended up going to the AFC Championship game. Having that experience will help them in a big way this season, and they brought in other veteran leaders that they will get past their final test to get into the Super Bowl in 2015.
5. The Presence and Further Improvement of Andrew Luck
While Luck has already been viewed as one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks for two seasons now, he still has some work to do. That is a scary thought for opposing defenses to say the least, and he will put up an even better season in 2015 than he did last year. Cutting down on a few turnovers and improving his decision-making will make him much more dangerous this year than he has been in his first three seasons.
After everything is said and done, the Colts are going to be standing alone as the NFL champions if they live up to their full potential. There is still work for them to do in order to get to that point, but they aren’t terribly far away.
Excitement hasn’t surrounded the Colts’ organization and the city of Indianapolis like it is this year in a long time. There is something about the feeling surrounding the 2015 Colts that seems special and like the final step on the path to greatness. Perhaps that is just fans being fans, but there is also the chance that Luck and the Colts will do something special this season and bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Indianapolis.
