Michael Sam became famous for being the first openly gay football player to be drafted into the NFL. He has been out of the league since his rookie season and has yet to play in a regular season game. Looking ahead at the 2016 NFL season, Sam is already planning to make a major attempt to come back and has fired all his agents in an attempt to re-brand himself.
According to a report from ESPN, Sam is looking to make a comeback and talked about his comeback attempt.
“I’ll try to pursue my NFL career,” Sam said. “Taking a break this year was very smart. I think it was one of the smartest things I’ve done in a long time. Right now, I’m just focusing on me and what my needs are. It’s been a roller coaster. I’ve been trying to figure out what’s next in my life.”
There is no question that Sam has the work ethic to make something for himself. Assuming he has been working hard to put on muscle and improve his quickness around the edge, there is always a chance that he can make a comeback. It won’t be easy to find a team that is willing to give him another chance, but there is no question that some team would be willing to give him a training camp deal.
It will be interesting to see how this comeback attempt goes after his failure at the veteran combine earlier this year.
Expect to see quite a few rumors about Sam over the next few months as the season progresses forward. Now that he has put his name back in the media, there will be quite a bit of speculation about which teams could use a player like him. Free agency will be an even more intriguing time to keep an eye on Sam’s name.
Don’t be surprised if he gets a deal to attempt to make a roster next offseason. He likely won’t end up making it, but obviously not giving up and working hard is a good start for him to make his dreams come true. At least he hasn’t decided to give into the failures that he has had since being drafted by the Rams and is focused even more than ever on getting back into the league.
