Ryan Grigson made a very unpopular decision to draft Miami Hurricanes receiver Phillip Dorsett with the Indianapolis Colts’ first round pick in this past offseason’s draft. It was a move that came as a major surprise, especially with the major needs that the Colts had on the defensive side of the football and the glut of receivers that the Colts already had on the depth chart.
Now, the decision to draft Dorsett is looking even more sketchy following a broken ankle that the rookie receiver suffered against the New Orleans Saints yesterday afternoon.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Colts will be without Dorsett for 4-6 weeks.
That news is very disappointing to say the very least, especially as Dorsett has shown flashes of impressive talent throughout the season. Andrew Luck is without question one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL, but has not looked like it so far this year. Losing some of his more dangerous targets is not what the Colts’ star quarterback needs at this point in time.
Dorsett has caught 11 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown so far this season as a rookie. He hasn’t been given a big role so far this season, but that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t been valuable.
There have been plays where the Colts have thrown their rookie receiver onto the field. His speed gives the team plenty of options down the field and forces defenses to panic at times as well. As he continues to play the game, Dorsett was expected to continue expanding his role throughout the remainder of the year.
At 22 years old, there is no reason for the Colts to panic despite the disappointment of the injury. He will be back at some point this season and the future is extremely bright for Dorsett as well. Assuming he continues working hard on his game and strives to be the best, there is no question that he can become a special playmaker for the Colts.
Expect to see him work hard to get back onto the field and to be the type of piece that makes the Colts’ offense even more dangerous moving forward.
