Cam Newton has been the hottest name in the NFL this season and the Carolina Panthers are sitting at 14-1 with him leading the way. He has been viewed by the media as the front-runner to win the MVP award this season and has been getting votes from players around the NFL as well recently. One of those players in Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.
McCoy talked during a recent interview as the Buccaneers gear up to play the Panthers in Week 17 and was asked about Newton’s potential MVP status.
“Do I think Cam Newton is the MVP of the league?” McCoy said. “First time that we played the Carolina Panthers, I talked about him being one of the best players. He’s been one of the best players in the league for a long time, and the Panthers have the best record in football right now. Why wouldn’t he be the great player on that? No one has played better than him. I’ve gotten a close up look at him. It would not be a surprise if he is the MVP of the league, yes.”
There is no question that Newton should be the MVP when opposing players for rival teams are calling him the front-runner. McCoy is a dominant defensive player and going up against the Panthers gives him a unique perspective.
Throughout the 2015 season, Newton has completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 3,544 yards, 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has also picked up 626 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. Carolina has needed every little bit of Newton’s production, as they have suffered through many injuries on the offensive side of the football.
Carolina appears to be the front-runner to win Super Bowl 50 as well and rightfully so.
At 26 years old, Newton is finally beginning to work his way into his full potential. He has a lot more football left to play and still has a bit more room to improve. Carolina will likely get him more talent to work with and throw to, which will help him put up even bigger numbers.
All of that being said, Newton will likely end up winning the MVP award and should do so very convincingly.
