Reflecting on Will Smith’s football legacy

Former New Orleans Saints pass-rusher Will Smith died suddenly and tragically on Saturday. Here, we reflect on his fantastic career by looking at the key numbers.

67.5: That’s the total number of sacks Smith recorded in his nine NFL seasons, ranking fourth in team history. Between 2004 and 2009, only 10 players had more sacks than his 49.5.

5: That’s the total number of games Smith missed in nine years.

13: That’s his sack total from the 2009 season, which ranked fifth in football. He also made the Pro Bowl with a 10.5-sack 2006 campaign.

17: That’s the total number of players picked ahead of Smith in the 2004 draft. Oddly, one of them — No. 5 overall pick Sean Taylor — was shot dead in 2007.

3: Taking things off the field, that’s the number of children Smith leaves behind. He had two with his wife, Racquel, who will no be forced to bring them up on her own. What a ludicrous world this is.
