It seemed simple: The Los Angeles Rams, who traded with the Tennessee Titans to get the No. 1 overall pick, were going to take either Jared Goff or Carson Wentz with the newly acquired pick.
Then, the Philadelphia Eagles would take whichever quarterback was available with the No. 2 pick. But Wentz spoke with reporters Wednesday, and now it doesn’t seem so clear.
Wentz said Wednesday that he and his agent have not spoken to anyone from the Eagles’ organization since Philadelphia acquired the No. 2 overall pick eight days before the draft. The silence comes following the Eagles’ bold trade and plenty of praise from new Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson.
The silence from the Eagles could mean two things. First, it could be that Philadelphia decided it was worth trading multiple draft picks so it could move up and draft a non-impact player. Don’t put it past the Eagles to make that sort of move. This is the same team that traded for Sam Bradford in the first place.
However, it’s quite possible Philadelphia could be setting a smoke screen less than 48 hours ahead of the draft. NFL teams make a living off of lying about their draft intentions prior to draft day.
Either way, Wentz’s decision to divulge this information adds more intrigue to Thursday’s first round. It also shows that the NFL is even willing to pull a guy from Bismarck, North Dakota into its never-ending circus.
