NFL fans have spoken with their wallets, and Colin Kaepernick is the brightest star in the league, at least he is if you consider jersey sale a fair indication of such things. According to CNBC, Kaepernick's jersey was purchased more than any other jersey in the league from April 1 through June 30.
Young guns Russell Wilson and Robert Griffin III were just behind Kaepernick respectively.
Part of Kaepernick's rise to fame is the controversial, high profile way in which he took over the starting job. It was a rare instance where Alex Smith was playing great football, got injured and lost his job simply because head coach Jim Harbaugh thought Kaepernick was the future, and it showed on the field on Sunday. Really, Alex Smith didn't lose the job; Kaepernick just won it.
The exposure of a Super Bowl appearance didn't help Kaepernick's popularity. Although the 49ers fell down by a wide margin in the first half, Kaepernick almost led the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. Yeah, he fell just a bit short, but the drama likely sold some extra jerseys.
Despite his rise to fame in the NFL, don't expect his jersey to stay on top of the sales charts. Think about it, most 49ers fans wouldn't have had a Kaepernick jersey before he was handed the starting job. Many of those fans now have his jersey, but they're not likely going to go back for a second or third jersey. Expect another young gun to jump to the top of the sales charts.
Think you know who's jersey will de-throne Kaepernick's? Let us know in the comments below.
