Micah Hyde is set to hit open free agency this offseason, but has already made it clear he would like to return to the Green Bay Packers. After being knocked out of the playoffs by the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship Game, the Packers will have quite a few big decisions to make this coming offseason.
Re-signing Hyde should certainly be at the top of the Packers’ priority list. He is the most versatile player in the Green Bay secondary and one of the top playmakers in their secondary as well. Losing him would be a huge blow to a Packers’ defense that was already extremely weak last season.
Hyde made it clear in a season-ending interview that he wants to return to Green Bay and thinks that the Packers are the best fit for him, but that he understands it will be a business decision as well.
“Whatever happens, happens. I don’t have much of a say in that,” Hyde said. “I’d love to (be back). This place is the best place for me, but at the end of the day, it has to be business decisions and it’s kind of out of my control.”
During the 2016 season with the Packers, Hyde compiled 58 tackles to go along with three interceptions and nine defensed passes. Hyde’s ability to play the cornerback or safety position gave the Packers many options. He played a massive role in Green Bay’s playoff run as well.
At just 26-years-old, the Packers would be wise to bring Hyde back on a long-term deal. He may not be the most athletic player in the secondary, but his football IQ and hard work cannot be denied. Letting him walk may be one of the biggest mistakes that Ted Thompson has made in his career with the Packers if that ends up happening.
All of that being said, don’t be surprised if the Packers work out a new deal with Hyde. They know how important he has been over the years and they cannot afford to let one of their best defensive backs walk.
