Jay Cutler was once considered one of the bright young quarterback talents in the NFL. Back in those days, he was the leader of an up-and-coming Denver Broncos team, but then a major trade occurred. Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears to be the face of a proud franchise looking to get back into serious contention.
Unfortunately, Cutler never figured things out in Chicago and he will go down as one of the biggest busts at the quarterback position in Bears’ franchise history. He did have some good moments, but much of his tenure in Chicago was viewed as a joke with fans begging the team to get rid of him.
Just a couple days ago, news was released that Cutler is retiring and has decided to join Fox in the broadcast booth. It was a shocking move and one that Cutler knows he will have some regret over in the future.
During an appearance on ESPN Radio’s Waddle and Silvy show (via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport), Cutler said the move to broadcasting is a “permanent” one, adding there’s “zero doubt in my mind there’s going to be some regret.”
Throughout the 139 career games that Cutler played in throughout his career, he completed 61.9 percent of his pass attempts for 32,467 yards, 208 touchdowns, and 146 interceptions. Turnovers were one of his biggest problems throughout his career, especially during his tenure with the Bears.
Needless to say, the other numbers show that Cutler had a semi-successful NFL career. His reputation won’t go down as a successful NFL quarterback, but he can be proud of the majority of his numbers.
It will be interesting to see whether Cutler feels the itch to attempt a comeback at some point in the future. Many quarterbacks have retired and said they were done with the game, just to come back a few years later. One quarterback that comes to mind is Carson Palmer, who resurrected his career with the Arizona Cardinals after a short time away from the game.
Cutler may be done with his playing days, but if the regret gets too strong too quick, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him return to the field at some point in the next couple years.
