Jaguars Owner Wayne Weaver Sells Team To Shahid Khan; Gene Smith Gets 3 Year Extension As GM

Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union is reporting that the Jacksonville Jaguars have been sold to Shahid Khan, who attempted to buy the Rams in 2010. Khan is expected to announce that he’ll be keeping the team in Jacksonville, something the Jaguars current owner, Wayne Weaver, was very adamant about from the very start of the franchise.

It’s been widely speculated that Weaver would only sell the team if there was an agreement by the new owner to keep the Jaguars in Jacksonville, and it would seem that such an agreement would be in the writing that goes with the sale of the team. Even if such an agreement isn’t in writing, it’s unlikely the team would move from Jacksonville any time soon as their current lease runs through 2029.

The Jaguars, who have been making headlines all morning, have also extended their general manager’s contract by 3 years. The move will keep Gene Smith as the Jaguars’ GM through the 2014 season.

Also announced earlier today, the Jaguars fired head coach Jack Del Rio, ending his 9 year tenure in Jacksonville.
