It looks like the Arizona Cardinals and Larry Fitzgerald are hot and heavy in negotiations to have him finish his career as a member of the Cardinals.
Fitzgerald was the third overall draft pick by the Cardinals in 2004 and has 909 receptions in a Cardinals uniform along with 89 touchdowns. It’s always nice to see someone as talented as Fitzgerald stay with the same team from beginning to end…
The wide receiver and the Cardinals are closing in on a deal to work out Fitzgerald’s cap situation, allowing him to stay in Arizona through the end of his career, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source informed of the deal.
Rapoport reported on Thursday’s NFL Total Access that the two sides had begun talking an extension.
UPDATE: Source are confirming that the deal is now done….
That word was accurate. PFT has learned, via a league source, that the deal is now done.
Full details of the agreement are still to come, but we know that there are major cap implications for the team in 2015. They’ll get back nearly $13 million in cap space that was originally earmarked for the veteran wideout, who stood to make $16 million in salary and count $23.6 million against the cap under his old deal.
That money will come in handy as the Cardinals try to both get in compliance with the cap by the start of the league year and create some room for them to make additions to the team once free agency gets underway.
