Evening Edition: Henne is Done, What’s Next for the Dolphins?

According to Jeff Darlington of NFL.com, Chad Henne’s season is over. His should will require surgery, and that’s that for his season. In all reality, that may end the Chad Henne era in Miami. Now that the Dolphins have no quarterback, a lame duck head coach, and a rebellious fan base, where do they go from here?

The Dolphins’ first stop will be to acquire a stop-gap quarterback that can get them through the rest of the season. There has been much speculation about bringing in former Jaguars’ quarterback David Garrard, but that hasn’t been realized to this point. Jason La Canfora of NFL.com is reporting that Sage Rosenfels is taking a physical with the team today.

In all reality, the season is lost. Henne’s injury didn’t kill the Dolphins’ season, their front office did. They fielded an under-talented team with a coach that they openly tried to replace. The Dolphins are back to square 1, and it’s time to blow it up again. Unlike the season following their 1-15 mark, they have young building blocks to work with.

The Dolphins only have 6 players on their active roster of age 30 or more. Here’s the translation for that: They have some talent, but they’re not ready yet.

So here’s where we stand right now. The Dolphins need a new quarterback and a new head coach. So, what about the rest of the season?

The Dolphins have a relatively difficult schedule. The one saving grace they do have is that they got their bye on week 5, so any quarterback they bring in will have a full week to prepare. The downside is that they have no sure-fire wins on their schedule. The best chances the Dolphins have of winning in 2011 come in week 7 against the Broncos and week 9 against the Chiefs. The problem is that those teams are on much more stable ground than the Dolphins.

I’m not yet ready to say that this team will go the distance and achieve the infamous 0-16 mark that only the Lions could find, but they are in dire straits. Tony Sparano would have to turn this team completely around to save his job, and frankly, they simply don’t have the talent for such a turn around. Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but Sparano WILL be getting the axe whether it be sooner or later. The Dolphins are in a rough spot, but things will get better as their roster comes into it’s own. Until then, there’s a lot of work to be done to make this team competitive.
