Calvin Johnson lands a massive 8-year contract extension with Detroit

There’s a saying that some subscribe to that wide receivers are a dime a dozen. That may be true, but from time to time a receiver comes along that needs to be paid like he’s the best player on the team, and Calvin Johnson is such a player.

According to the Lion’s team website, Calvin Johnson has been signed to an 8 year contract worth nearly $130 million, making him the highest paid wide receiver in the history of the league.

In 5 years of work, Johnson has become one of the league’s premier playmakers, compiling a stat line of 366 receptions, 5,872 yards, and 49 touchdowns. At 6’5″, Johnson is a defensive nightmare and is a constant big-play threat for the Lions. That’s an asset the Lions were apparently wanting to lock down for a long time to come.

Lions receivers coach Shawn Jefferson told the team website, “Here’s the deal, Calvin is just entering into the prime of his career. The things you saw Calvin do this year, the next five years, you’re going to see even better things coming. You are going to see even more explosion out of this guy and it’s going to be scary. I think this guy is rewriting the books.”

According to Rotoworld, Johnson’s $130 million contract contains $60 million in guaranteed money, and the deal runs through the 2019 season.
