2015 NFL Draft Profile: Dante Fowler Jr

Despite the Florida Gators being miserable on the offensive side of the football over the last few years, their defense was among the best in the Nation. One of the big reasons for that success was Dante Fowler Jr. Fowler led the Gators in sacks in 2014 (8.5) and led them in tackles for loss in 2013 (10.5) and 2014 (15). He also led the Gators in QB hurries in 2014 with 17 and he forced five fumbles over the last two seasons.

Strengths

Fowler is very athletic with a quick first step and has a great spin move. He has the skills to excel as a pass rusher and also has the ability to stop the run especially in pursuit. Overall, he’s a very well rounded guy who has a tremendous upside.

Weaknesses

Not great against the run when it’s coming at him and at the NFL level needs to add some strength. At Florida, he was asked to play multiple positions so may need some time to develop into full capability.

NFL Fit

With his current frame he would be a fit at OLB in a 4-3 defense but will probably develop into a 3-4 OLB. Has the ability to fit multiple schemes.

Draft Projection

Top 10 pick

Right now, most draft boards have Fowler going 3rd to the Jacksonville Jaguars but he could go as low as 6th to the New York Jets or 7th to the Chicago Bears.

Conclusion

Dante Fowler Jr brings a ton of talent and potential to the outside linebacker position and his versatility really makes him a valuable commodity in the draft. In college, Fowler showed that he could be a force but he will need to refine his skills in the NFL and under the right tutelage he could become a 10+ sack guy very quickly in the NFL.
