The Indianapolis Colts are without question one of the best teams in the NFL heading into the 2015 season, and it has a lot to do with the fact that they have put together one of the best offenses that the league has seen in quite some time.
Last season the Colts had the league’s best passing offense, and they made it even better this offseason. Adding Andre Johnson was signed in free agency, but the most surprising move of the offseason was drafting Miami Hurricanes receiver Phillip Dorsett in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. It was a move that shocked fans, and also angered a few that thought Indianapolis should look at improving their defense before worrying about offense.
Dorsett is a player that the Colts are incredibly high on. According to a report from NFL.com, the Colts feel like they got a future superstar by selecting him. One comparison that was made for him was DeSean Jackson of the Washington Redskins.
During his 2014 season with the Hurricanes, Dorsett ended up catching 36 passes for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns. In case you don’t want to do the math, that is an impressive average of 24.2 yards per catch.
One of Dorsett’s teammates is a very similar type of player, and that is budding superstar T.Y. Hilton. He has the same type of speed, and playing alongside of Andrew Luck is going to make him more dangerous than many are expecting. The Colts have shown that they can develop speedy wide receivers into much more than that, and that is the path that Dorsett is headed down now.
Needless to say, the potential for Dorsett is through the roof. If he continues working hard on his game and allows the Colts’ coaching staff to mold him as a player, then he can get to wherever he wants to be.
Comparing him to a player like Jackson makes a lot of sense as well, and it certainly should excite the Colts’ fan base moving forward.
Whether or not they end up getting an actual superstar in Dorsett or not is another question, but they will be getting a player that can step in and make plays for them. He may never develop into an all-around dominant player, but there is nothing holding him back from being a speedster that can force defenses to bend and even break. That is what they need from him long-term, and anything past that is just extra.
Expect to see him carve out a fairly nice role for himself during his rookie season, and to show off some of the “superstar” potential that the Colts see in him. He is certainly NFL ready from a physical standpoint, and it will be very interesting to see him in action against an opposing defense.
