The Green Bay Packers suffered a huge loss on Sunday afternoon when Jordy Nelson went down with a torn ACL. He will miss the entire 2015 season, and losing him will hurt the Green Bay offense in a big way. Nelson is one of the best wide receivers in the entire NFL, and finding a way to replace him is going to be extremely difficult.
Ty Montgomery was selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Many Green Bay fans were frustrated with Ted Thompson’s decision to draft a wide receiver when there were other major needs around the roster. Now, he appears to be a genius if Montgomery can live up to the hype that he has been receiving during early training camp and preseason action.
At 6-foot-0 and 216 pounds, Montgomery has been compared to a bigger version of Randall Cobb. He did take over the role that Nelson would normally have during today’s practice, and the outlook for his season looks extremely bright.
On the first snap of team, Packers went 3 WRs with Davante Adams and Ty Montgomery outside, Randall Cobb in the slot. #Packers

If the Packers are going to make a run at winning a Super Bowl, they will need their rookie receiver to step up and shoulder the load that Nelson’s injury has left. Jeff Janis is also going to be asked to step up, but Montgomery is obviously the player that Mike McCarthy and the Packers’ coaching staff are turning to first.
Montgomery has caught just two passes for 28 yards throughout the first two Green Bay preseason games. He hasn’t been much of a factor thus far, but now he will be worked into the game much more aggressively. Aaron Rodgers is capable of making any player around him better, and that was obvious last season when rookie receiver Davante Adams improved leaps and bounds throughout the season.
Green Bay has had quite a bit of success developing young receivers, and Montgomery is just the next player that they will work on.
Needless to say, it will be very interesting to see what ends up happening for the Packers moving forward with Montgomery in a bigger role. He certainly has the talent to make huge improvements throughout the year and be the type of playmaker that Green Bay needs. Nelson’s injury makes things much more difficult on Green Bay, but they have the necessary pieces to replace him and move forward.
