The fallout of the Jordy Nelson injury is still occurring, and Green Bay is scrambling to figure out who will help step up and replace his production. Randall Cobb is the number one receiver now for superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but his second option is going to be second-year wide receiver Davante Adams. Cobb talked to the media and said that he believes Adams will have a big breakout season, and that he can’t wait to help him accomplish that.
“He’s poised for a breakout year,” Cobb said Tuesday. “He’s poised for a big year. I look forward to helping him accomplish that.”
Cobb is going to do everything he can to help mentor Adams, and get him ready for his new role. It isn’t going to be easy for the young second-year player to fill Nelson’s shoes, but he certainly showed the talent and potential to do so last year towards the end of his rookie season.
During his rookie season with the Packers, Adams caught 38 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns. He didn’t start receiving a large role until late in the year, and it was obvious that Rodgers began gaining more trust in him. Adams has the type of athleticism and physicality that Nelson had, but he doesn’t have the veteran experience to lean on in big game situations.
At 22 years old, Adams has an incredibly bright future ahead of him with the Packers. There is no denying the talent that he possesses, and his own teammates are saying that they expect a big year from him.
Assuming he continues working hard on his game and allows the coaching staff and players like Cobb and Nelson to mentor him, there is no ceiling for his potential.
Green Bay desperately needs him to step up and take over the majority of the production that Nelson would have brought to the field. Adams is very confident in his own ability as well, and he is prepared to shoulder some of the burden that Nelson would have carried this year.
“It’s hard to really know what the offseason MVP really means,” Adams said. “But it’s obviously goes to show I’ve been putting in some good work with my quarterback and [in] the weight room, just trying to be the best that I can. I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job of taking that into training camp and preseason as well.”
Needless to say, this should excite Green Bay fans even more about their second-year receiver. Ted Thompson could have gotten yet another wide receiver steal in the draft, and it could be exactly what saves the Packers’ season.
Expect to see Adams step up immediately to start the 2015 season, and be the second receiver that Rodgers and the offense need to rebound from Nelson’s torn ACL.
