The Green Bay Packers are already a wide receiver short with the loss of star receiver Jordy Nelson for the season with a torn ACL. Randall Cobb also went down with what looked to be a potential serious injury, but it appears that he will be just fine for Week 1 of the regular season against the Chicago Bears.
Now the question for the Packers becomes, should they look into making a move to bring in another wide receiver?
Cobb is going to be fine for Week 1, and the Packers are going to have Davante Adams as the number two receiver. Those two players have their roles chiseled into stone, but after them there are quite a few question marks.
Behind those two players, the Packers have three very unproven receivers on the roster. Second-year players Jeff Janis and Jared Abbrederis are potential options to get playing time, while they also have a very talented rookie out of Stanford in Ty Montgomery. All three of those players are capable of earning roles, but consistency is a concern with them.
Aaron Rodgers is more than capable of making players better around him no matter who they are. Bringing in a veteran wide receiver like Wes Welker or one of the other many options on the market might be a smart move for insurance, but it definitely isn’t necessary.
Ted Thompson has been excellent at bringing in young talent that develops into starting talent throughout their career. He has had excellent success with his wide receivers in particular. Janis definitely has the physical ability to step up this season, and Montgomery also seems like a solid option.
Perhaps the most underrated option and a player that isn’t talked about as a potential impact player is Myles White. He has been with the Packers for the last few seasons, mainly spending time on their practice squad and improving his game. White showed off some impressive skills during Green Bay’s third preseason game, where he caught nine passes for 89 yards on the night including a very impressive one-handed catch despite a pass interference call on the defender.
Needless to say, it will be very interesting to see what ends up happening with the Packers over the next couple weeks. They were reportedly interested in Reggie Wayne at one point, and Welker has been rumored to be a player of interest throughout the offseason as well.
Whether the Packers do bring in another receiver or not, they are still going to be a legitimate championship contender.
Expect to see rumors pop up about them showing interest or discussing a potential deal with a veteran at some point before the regular season kicks off. They definitely don’t “need” to bring another player in, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
