Mike McCarthy may be on the hot seat after the way that the Green Bay Packers have played this season. The media certainly seems to think that the Packers should consider firing McCarthy and moving on with someone new.
At this point in the season, the Packers are 4-5 and third in the NFC North division race. They are without question still a contender in the NFC, but they have to figure out a way to get themselves back on track. Green Bay has looked worse each of the last three weeks and there have been no signs of that negative progression slowing down.
Aaron Rodgers took the time to comment on his head coach and defended him amidst all the drama.
“I think people don’t understand how difficult it is to win in this league and win consistently. The success that we’ve had here, it’s tough to do. We’ve set the standard pretty high.
But I wouldn’t listen to some of those people out there. I mean, they’re not in this locker room, they’re not in the meeting rooms, they’re not in the practice environments. They don’t know what’s going on, they don’t know the type of work ethic that we have here and that Mike has here.”
Needless to say, the support that Rodgers threw his way had to be comforting for McCarthy. The media has been pushing the idea that Rodgers and McCarthy were unhappy with each other and that drama could be coming soon between the leaders of the Packers’ franchise.
Now that Rodgers has thrown his support behind his head coach, everyone can move on with their day.
That being said, it will be interesting to see what the Packers do the rest of the season. If they are unable to snap out of their funk, would it be crazy to assume that Ted Thompson and the Packers’ brass would consider a coaching change? After winning just one Super Bowl with the best quarterback in the NFL leading the way, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to consider all options.
If the Packers were to fire McCarthy, they would have their pick of just about anyone they wanted. Not many coaches would turn down the opportunity to coach the Green Bay Packers, especially with Rodgers under center.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the next few months have in store for McCarthy, Rodgers, and the Packers.
