That’s what this Los Angeles Rams trade with the Tennessee Titans amounts to. It’s obvious the Rams feel Carson Wentz and/or Jared Goff are better options than Paxton Lynch, who is expected to be available in the middle of the first round.
But does it make sense to sacrifice a first-round pick, two second-round picks and a third-round pick merely to gain the chance to pick between Wentz and Goff, rather than “settling” for Lynch, whom many still consider to be the best quarterback in this draft class?
Considering that as many first overall picks have been busts as have been stars, and that 13 of the last 17 Super Bowls have been won by teams led by quarterbacks who were not drafted in the top 10, I just don’t see how the Rams can justify this.
What’s amazing is this is a team that just last year practically boasted about the fact it had robbed the Washington Redskins in a similarly desperate-looking trade four years ago. Is that not a cautionary tale? It’s obvious they’ve fallen in love here, and that often leads to rash decisions.
This might still pan out well for the Rams, but there’s a strong chance it doesn’t. They’re going out on a hell of a limb, which is somewhat understandable considering that they haven’t posted a winning record in over a decade.
Fact is, folks in Southern California likely would have been just as excited about Lynch in the middle of the first round — especially if they’d still have a first-round pick next year and two second-rounders this year — and the Memphis product might turn into the best of the batch anyway.
