Davante Adams was expected to break out in a big way for the Green Bay Packers last season, but that didn’t end up happening. Instead, the Packers’ offense struggled in a big way with Jordy Nelson out for the season with a torn ACL. Now the question becomes, will Adams earn a roster spot for this coming season?
According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Adams’ roster spot isn’t secure with the Packers. There will be a lot of competition at the wide receiver position and if Adams doesn’t come in much improved he could be the odd man out.
Looking ahead at the competition, Nelson and Randall Cobb will be obvious No. 1 and No. 2 targets. After those two players, there is mass chaos at the position.
Rookie wide receiver Trevor Davis will be working hard for playing time, while second-year receiver Ty Montgomery showed signs of playmaking potential. Jeff Janis and Jared Abbrederis also showed signs of life late in the season last year. Janis could very well break out as a top target for Aaron Rodgers after the way that he played in the playoffs against the Arizona Cardinals.
During the 2015 season with the Packers, Adams caught just 50 passes for 483 yards and a touchdown. Those numbers aren’t going to get the job done for a player like Adams.
At just 23-years-old, there is more than enough time for Adams to prove himself this year. He needs to come into training camp and preseason action with much more focus and it needs to be obvious that he worked hard on his game. Adams has to prove to the coaching staff that they can trust him again.
Just two years ago as a rookie, Adams showed the potential to be a top target for Rodgers and the Packers.
Needless to say, the stage is set for what should be a very entertaining offseason program for the Packers. They are hoping to get their offense back to an elite level and Adams is hoping to be a part of it.
Expect to see him come out in training camp looking to prove a point and it would seem to be a bit shocking if the Packers ended up cutting him ahead of the season.
