Oakland Raiders: Three Things to Watch in Second Preseason Game

The Oakland Raiders are set to face off against the Green Bay Packers this evening in their second 2016 NFL preseason game. It is a game that should look better than the first week of games, although it is still preseason and will not be pretty. Both of these teams are looking to improve to 2-0 in preseason action.

Looking ahead to the regular season, the Raiders are hoping to finally become playoff contenders once again. It has been a long time since they were viewed as a team talented enough to make the postseason.

Thanks to rebuilding the right way and patience, the Raiders have gotten themselves back to the point where they can compete in the AFC playoff picture.

All of that being said, what three things should the Raiders and their fan base be on the lookout for in particular this evening?

Can George Atkinson III Keep Up His Strong Play?

Last week in the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, running back George Atkinson III carried the football five times for 97 yards and two touchdowns. He showed off a major playmaking ability and is looking to earn a role for the upcoming season. Atkinson will have a chance to prove himself two weeks in a row and could put pressure on Latavius Murray for carries.

How Do the Three Quarterbacks Play?

Derek Carr is the obvious starter in Oakland and it will be entertaining to watch him sling the ball around in limited playing time tonight. There is a competition for the backup role. Matt McGloin and Connor Cook are competing for that spot and it will be interesting to see how they both play tonight.

Will the Defensive Secondary Continue Making Big Plays?

One of the biggest issues for the Raiders over the past few seasons has been the poor play of their defensive secondary. Opposing quarterbacks have been able to shred them for big games each and every week. Oakland has been trying to build their secondary back up and they played well last week, but they need to start showing consistency even in the preseason.

Do you think the Oakland Raiders should be considered playoff contenders this season? What do you think their final record will be this season? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below!
