Randall Cobb was expected to have a massive season last year, but that didn’t end up happening. After star wide receiver Jordy Nelson went down with a torn ACL in preseason action against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cobb immediately became the No. 1 target for superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Despite the enlarged role, Cobb struggled in a big way throughout the season.
He was only able to catch 79 passes for 829 yards and six touchdowns on the season. Those numbers may not look terrible, but a lot more was expected from him due to what kind of numbers he had put up in the previous couple of seasons as the second receiving option.
During a recent interview, Cobb talked about his struggles and his desire to turn things around in 2016.
“I didn’t perform at the capacity that I know I can perform at,” Cobb said. “At the end of the day, nobody cares about what you had going on. Did you play well or did you not? I’m the only one who can change that.”
There is no question that the Packers’ offense should take a step forward from last season. They were riddled with injuries and simply couldn’t get on track. Eddie Lacy’s struggles with weight didn’t help the problems either.
At just 25-years-old, Cobb still has a lot of growth to make over the next few seasons. He is far from maxing out his potential, which is great news for the Packers and a scary thought for opposing defensive coordinators. If he can get his head on straight this season, there is a good chance that he will be among the league leaders in receptions and yardage, while having a shot at being up there in touchdowns.
Rodgers is without question the best quarterback in the NFL and he needs his wide receivers to step up for him this season.
Expect to see Cobb turn things around and get back on track this season. He has been using his frustration from last year push him to work harder this offseason and that will show when the regular season comes around.
