CHICAGO, IL – APRIL 28: (L-R) Joey Bosa of Ohio State holds up a jersey with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after being picked #3 overall by the San Diego Chargers during the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University on April 28, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois. The eight most surprising picks from Round 1 of the 2016 NFL draft

Round 1 is in the books. Here’s what surprised us the most…

3. Chargers take DE Joey Bosa: Most figured it was going to be one of the top two offensive tackles or defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Bosa could be a weird fit in a 3-4 defense. I have a feeling they were dead set on drafting Laremy Tunsil before this happened. That would explain why Bosa was so surprised, as were we.

8. Titans trade up to take OT Jack Conklin: Few expected Conklin to go before Tunsil. Nobody expected somebody to trade up to take Conklin ahead of Tunsil. By that whole bong thing happened and all bets were off.

10. Giants take CB Eli Apple: It wasn’t a reach, but they have two expensive starters at cornerback and could use a lot of help up front. Plus, most expected Vernon Hargreaves to be the first corner taken not named Jalen Ramsey.

13. Dolphins take OT Laremy Tunsil: For obvious reasons. It’s possible Miami got the best player in this draft 13th overall. And that was after trading down.

14. Raiders take S Karl Joseph: Few had him going that high, especially as he comes off a torn ACL. And the Raiders just signed Reggie Nelson.

15. Browns take WR Corey Coleman: They have a lot of holes to fill and receiver is an area that can use an upgrade. This might also be a solid value pick. What I’m saying is it might be a good selection, but few expected they’d wind up with Coleman. And few probably expected they’d trade down and not take Paxton Lynch.

17. Falcons take S Keanu Neal: My grandmother was certain they’d draft a linebacker, and she doesn’t even know what a linebacker is. They need help in the middle in a major way, and this doesn’t appear to be good value.

30. Panthers take DT Vernon Butler: They already have two great defensive tackles, there should be plenty of good ones available in Rounds 2 and 3, and they could use secondary help after letting Josh Norman go.
