Top 5 NFL Players from Week 1

This weekly segment will highlight the best performances of the week in the NFL. Every position and player is eligible, all it requires is a truly epic showing. It’s not always stat driven, or analytics grade driven, though those things help you get on this list.

1. A.J. Green, WR, Bengals

The Bengals narrowly defeated the Jets 23-22 and it was almost entirely thanks to A. J. Green putting the whole team on his back. He rewarded his 13 targets for an NFL leading 12 catches, 180 yards, and 1 touchdown. The Jets had no answer for him.

2. Drew Brees, QB, Saints

Hardly a surprise but Brees leads the NFL in yards (423), passing touchdowns (4) and rating (131.3) after one week. Even so, this wasn’t enough to help his team win against the Raiders. It’s truly unbelievable how bad the Saints defense continually performs as they find ways to waste epic performances like this.

3. Spencer Ware, RB, Chiefs

The Chiefs won’t be in a rush to get Jamaal Charles back based on how Ware played. He rushed for 70 yards on 11 carries (6.4 per) and added 129 yards on 7 catches. His 199 yards from scrimmage in week 1 lead the NFL.

4. DeAngelo Williams, RB, Steelers

Le’Veon who? Williams leads the NFL with 143 rushing yards (5.5 per) and 2 touchdowns. As good as Ben Roethlisberger looked in this game, Williams was better. Like a fine wine, he continues to get better with age.

5. Leonard Williams, DE, Jets

The 2015 1st round pick leads the NFL with 2.5 sacks currently. Without him, A. J. Green might have 400 yards receiving.
