The Virginia Tech Hokies were able to win the recruiting sweepstakes for Reggie Floyd and couldn’t be more excited to have him on-the-field. He played multiple positions during his high school career, but is expected to play safety for the Hokies.
Standing in at 6-foot-0 and 205 pounds, Floyd is expected to bring a lot of playmaking potential to the table.
Virginia Tech finished the 2015 college football season with a 7-6 record, which was good enough for 4th in the ACC Coastal conference. It certainly wasn’t where they wanted to finish. One of the big issues for the Hokies was their defense, which was way too porous to compete with the top-notch teams in the ACC.
Floyd is going to be an immediate difference maker for the Hokies when he gets onto the field. He has the speed, instincts and strength to make plays in many different areas.
It wasn’t easy securing a commitment from Floyd for the Hokies. They had to battle with teams like North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia and Florida for his services. Now that they have him, it is time to look ahead at what he will bring to the field for the Hokies.
There is no better person to explain what Floyd will bring to the field than the man himself. Floyd sat down and took the time to do an exclusive interview with our very own Evan Massey. We hope that you enjoy his interview and begin following along with Floyd as he takes the next step in his career.
Q. What made you choose to commit to Virginia Tech? What were the main deciding factors in your decision?
Floyd: Out of all the schools that recruited me, Tech was the school that really seemed genuine when I talked to them. It was like nothing was scripted, it was real. Main deciding factors were the school being close to home so my parents would always be able to see me play. Lane stadium is great with all the Hokie fans, coaching staff, academics. It just really felt like home to me.
Q. How would you describe your game to a fan that hasn’t heard or seen much of you?
Floyd: I would say I’m a player that loves playing in the secondary, hard hitting, love contact and the idea of taking the passing game away from the offense. I believe I can play in space and in the box close to the line of scrimmage.
Q. What positions do you expect to play at VT after officially being listed as a running back by ESPN?
Floyd: I expect to play safety or wherever I’m needed. But I was recruited by VT as a safety. I’m confident the coaches will place me in the best position to be successful. I can’t wait to play at the next level.
Q. What is it like making such a change from offense to defense while making such a big jump to the D1 level?
Floyd: The biggest change for me will be playing at the D1 level, learning the defense, and the speed of the game. But I was a two-way starter in high school at running back and free safety so it won’t be new to me position wise.
Q. What are your goals for you career at Virginia Tech? Both team and individual goals.
Floyd: Team wise, I just want to learn and fit in with my teammates and be able to be a part of something special like a championship. Individually I would definitely like to become a starter on defense and become a playmaker. Someone the offense has to worry about.
Q. Is there a current college or NFL safety that you would compare your game to?
Floyd: No. I’m nowhere near as good as any of those guys yet. But my favorite all-time players that I watch all the time are Sean Taylor and Kam Chancellor.
Q. What do you think are your biggest strengths? What do you think needs the most work in your game?
Floyd: I would say my biggest strengths are heart and studying film. I’ve always felt it was important part of football. Also not shying away from contact, I love to hit. My game needs work everywhere. I’m going from high school to D1 football I have a lot to learn.
Q. What would you like to say to the Hokies’ fan base in closing?
Floyd: In closing I’d like to say I LOVE my Hokie fan base and I can’t wait to be on the field making plays that they can cheer for.
As you can tell from this interview, Virginia Tech fans should be excited to have Floyd on their side. Other teams in the ACC can already begin preparing for a major defensive threat that the Hokies are about to unleash.
