Parity has taken a heavy grip on today’s NFL, and we’re nearing the point where our definition of a dynasty needs to be altered.
But there was a time when dynasties roamed the league. Dating back to the ‘60s, each decade has been owned by one team. Here are the five greatest dynasties in league history.
5. New England Patriots (2001-2011)
Championships: 3
Playoff Wins: 16
Record: 134-42 (1st in NFL during that span)
Biggest dynasty Challengers: Giants, Colts, Ravens
Let’s just go ahead and acknowledge Spygate happened. It was illegal and Bill Belichick was punished for it, though the actual amount of taping he did was minimal at best.
But the few (I think? I hope) Patriots spygate tin foil hat wearers still out there fail to grasp a simple concept: the fallout from Spygate was completed in the spring of 2008. Since then the Pats have lost only 21 regular-season games over six seasons while advancing to the AFC Championship three times and the Super Bowl once.
Rant over. The New England Patriots won three of the first four Super Bowls to start the last decade, a run which began with Tom Brady’s emergence. The Patriots’ season was supposed to be lost in 2001 when Drew Bledsoe was clocked by Mo Lewis. Instead the Patriots went 11-3 with Brady as the injury replacement and eventual franchise quarterback.
