Cleveland Browns Draft Target: North Carolina QB Mitch Trubisky

The Cleveland Browns are still searching for the answer at the quarterback position and might have a chance to find that answer in this year’s draft class. Mitch Trubisky is a name that has come up often in the draft process as a potential fit for the Browns. He has star potential and might be the quarterback to save the Browns’ franchise.

Hue Jackson and the Browns likely won’t take Trubisky with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. That seems to be decided already, with Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett being the likely pick.

If the Browns don’t take Trubisky with the No. 1 overall pick, they could target him with the No. 12 overall pick in the draft if he is still available. That might be a long shot at this point, but it is certainly intriguing to consider.

All of that being said, let’s take a closer look at Trubisky and come to a conclusion about whether or not the Browns should seriously target him in the draft.

NFL Comparison: Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford

Strengths

  • Good build to withstand NFL
  • Efficient delivery
  • Strong ability to move around in the pocket
  • Pinpoint accuracy on deep ball, even when throwing to the outside
  • Strong mentally and ready to lead
  • Best mid-range passer in the draft class
  • Can make plays with his legs

Weaknesses

  • Hasn’t played in an NFL offense, most of snaps came out of shotgun
  • Doesn’t possess top-notch pocket awareness
  • Didn’t have to throw in tight windows often throughout college career
  • Leaves passes behind receivers too often

Overview

Trubisky has some major strengths and some glaring weaknesses, but he still seems like a good target for the Browns. He completed 68.2 percent of his pass attempts for 3,748 yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions last season. Those numbers show why so many teams are interested in him at the top of the draft.

Cleveland definitely shouldn’t draft him with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but if he is available at No. 12, they should take him immediately.
