The 2017 NFL Draft has been full of surprises early on and the Houston Texans were a big part of that. Afer trading away Brock Osweiler earlier in the offseason, it was obvious that they wanted a quarterback in the draft. Deshaun Watson slid past both Mitch Trubisky and Patrick Mahomes, but the Texans aggressively traded up to the No. 12 overall pick in the draft to take the Clemson star.

Last season with the Clemson Tigers, Watson ended up completing 67.0 percent of his pass attempts for 4,593 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. There are obvious concerns about the number of interceptions he threw, but the Texans obviously feel confident that he will develop just fine.
Houston is a perfect landing spot for Watson. He will have a true star target in DeAndre Hopkins, while also having a speedster in Will Fuller. The Texans also will take pressure off of their young quarterback with running back Lamar Miller behind him in the backfield.
NFL.com broke down Watson’s fit at the next level and listed the pros and cons about his game.
“Teams will have to weigh the inconsistent field vision and decision-making against his size, athleticism, leadership and production. While not perfect, teams can add checks to both arm and accuracy boxes for Watson. However, discussions about whether or not his areas of improvement can be corrected will likely determine whether a team will view him as a high-upside prospect or a franchise quarterback. Watson’s transition from Clemson’s offense to a pro-style attack will obviously take time, but his combination of intangibles and athletic ability make him worth a first-round selection.”
It will be interesting to see how Watson fits with the Texans during the 2017 NFL season. He may not end up starting, but at this point in time he certainly appears to be the best quarterback on the roster.
