Kansas City Chiefs Trade Up to No. 10 for QB Patrick Mahomes II

Patrick Mahomes II turned into a star at Texas Tech and worked his way up the draft boards throughout the 2017 NFL Draft process. He did enough to show Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs that they wanted to bring him in to groom him to be the quarterback of the future. Kansas City traded all the way up to the No. 10 overall pick from the No. 27 pick to draft Mahomes.

Last season at Texas Tech, Mahomes put together a 65.7 percent completion percentage to go along with 5,052 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He was not scared to create plays down the field, but has also proven to have an accurate short and mid-range arm. Mahomes also scored 12 touchdowns on the ground in 2016.

There have been some concerns about his decision-making throughout his college career. Some have compared Mahomes to the original gunslinger, Brett Favre.

One NFL executive believes that Mahomes could get off to a rough start in the NFL, but that he has the potential to become a special NFL talent.

“He’s got a great arm, big balls and he’s mobile. He is going to drive his head coach crazy for the first couple of years and there is no getting around that. If it clicks for him and he’s coachable, I think he could become a special quarterback.”

Kansas City is the perfect landing spot for Mahomes. He will sit behind Alex Smith for the next couple years and learn the game from the sidelines. Reid is the right coach to get the most out of Mahomes and it will be interesting to see how he grows and progresses over the next two or three seasons.

Do you think Patrick Mahomes II was the right pick for the Chiefs? If not, who do you think they should have taken with the No. 10 pick? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below!
